Message From Thom Cox
As the dog days of summer come to an end, I wanted to thank everyone for the positive feedback we received on our first TCA E-Newsletter. We feel it’s important for our clients and consultants to know not only how we move our projects from concept to completion but to share stories about the TCA team and what keeps us so motivated.

Speaking of keeping busy, TCA has a number of projects under construction totaling around $430 million dollars. These projects include: Hikari, a project in LA’s Little Tokyo district with The Related Companies, Waterstone at Playa Vista with Intracorp, Northpark in San Jose and Woodbury Apartments with Irvine Apartment Communities, Bella Vista in Los Angeles with Equity Residential, 1100 Wilshire and Metro 417 with Forest City Development, Sunset Lofts on Sunset Blvd with Legacy Partners, Library Gardens in Berkeley with Transaction Group, Avalon Wilshire with Avalon Bay Communities, Trio in click for full story

TCA Raises $60,000 by Swinging Golf Clubs for Habitat for Humanity Orange County
For the eighth consecutive year, TCA and Habitat for Humanity Orange County joined forces by hosting an annual charity golf tournament. This year’s event was held on June 20th at El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel. The tournament raised $60,000 for Habitat for Humanity’s mission of working in partnership with families in Orange County to provide decent, affordable housing. At this year’s tournament, TCA presented a $100,000 check from proceeds of past golf tournament to Habitat for Humanity to help fund their upcoming project in Cypress, California.

This year’s $10,000 Tournament Sponsor was Option One Mortgage/HR Block and $5000 Platinum Sponsors included Forest City Enterprises, LDI Mechanical/Parks Mechanical, Suffolk Construction, New Century Financial, TCA and Dale Christian Structural Engineers.

TCA HONORED WITH PRESTIGIOUS CONGRESS FOR THE NEW URBANISM AWARD
TCA has been named a winner of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) 2005 Charter Award (The Neighborhood, the District, and the Corridor) for the firm’s design (and masterplan) of Westgate Pasadena, an urban infill project that Sares-Regis Group is developing in historic Pasadena, CA. The community plan preserves and builds on the city’s legacy of New Urbanism and sound planning, and is one of 14 urban community plans honored this year by the CNU for excellence in design and development.

Different from most architectural awards, the Charter Award looks at how plans and projects integrate with their surrounding environments, from blocks to neighborhoods to entire regions. Congress for the New Urbanism president John Norquist said the winners demonstrate the power of planning and design work that insists on excellence not only in architecture, but also in its relationship with surroundings.

TCA STAFF LENDS A HAND TO HELP BUILD SEVEN HOMES FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY’S CYPRESS PROJECT
TCA recently donated their time and muscle to help build seven homes for Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. The homes are located in the city of Cypress and TCA brought out more than 50 volunteers that included staff, family and friends to join together to help frame homes for the less fortunate.

The attached homes are 1360 square feet, four bedrooms, one full bath, two half baths, living room, dining area, kitchen and a two-car garage. TCA is a major $100,000 donor with funds from their annual golf tournament revenue.

These homes in Cypress are Habitat for Humanity of Orange County’s 113th-119th homes. These homes were sold to qualified low-income families for a 1% down payment and a no-interest mortgage. Each family is expected to contribute 500 hours of labor by building their home or volunteering for the Habitat organization.

TCA PROMOTES ARCHITECTS INTO DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP POSITIONS
TCA recently promoted five individuals into key leadership positions within their Irvine headquarters. TCA has recently opened an office in downtown Los Angeles and these promotions will play a significant role in the company’s growth and expansion as one of the premier urban design firms in Southern California.

Daniel P. Gehman, AIA was promoted to Principal and is one of TCA’s most talented architects and staff mentor. He oversees a design studio and is currently working on a number of TCA’s high-profile projects in downtown Los Angeles which include a $250 million mixed-use development in Little Tokyo known as Block 8 and several high-rise adaptive re-use condominium conversion projects. Gehman is a regular speaker on architectural design, lending his expertise at the Urban Land Institute’s annual Multifamily Trends Conference, Multi-Housing World and AIA (The American Institute of Architects.)

TCA All American Picnic a Success
The weather could not have been more perfect as TCA welcomed staff and their families to our first company picnic held Saturday, August 20th at Little Oaks Park in Orange. Inspired by an “All American” theme; employees, their families & friends dined on good old-fashioned cuisine of smoky barbequed chicken, sizzling hamburgers, potato salad, juicy summer melon and fresh baked cookies.

Decorations of red, white and blue balloons, adorned the location as attendees arrived dressed patriotic apparel. Festivities included an assortment of team competitions such as the traditional three-legged race, a water balloon toss, volleyball, ping-pong tournaments, and a watermelon eating contest. Clowns twisted balloon animals and artists painted faces as kids ransacked their stars and striped goodie-bags for prizes and candy.

NEIGHBORHOOD SUPPORT KEY INGREDIENT FOR PROJECT DESIGNED TO REVITALIZE WEST SUNSET BLVD
Strong support from both neighbors and Los Angeles city officials were key components to the successful planning of 7950 West Sunset. The 183-unit mixed-use housing and retail development on Sunset Boulevard is near Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles and will serve as a catalyst to revitalize the area.

Ground has been broken for the mixed-use building that was designed by the Los Angeles and Irvine, CA, firm TCA. The project has five stories of residential over ground-level retail and four levels of underground parking. 7950 West Sunset is being developed by Legacy Partners and the land is owned by the Director’s Guild of America adjacent to its national headquarters building at 7920 Sunset Boulevard.

TCA project manager John Brooks, AIA, said the Guild management as well as surrounding neighborhood groups was deeply involved in the 7950 West Sunset design process to ensure
